Child and Youth Program

The CYC Program is committed to a creative and fun approach to learning.  In general, the CYC Program meets three times a week during the school year on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Usually, activities on Tuesdays are geared towards life skills and activities on Thursdays are geared towards social skills.  Click here for more information on the CYC Program.

The skills we focus on are based on practical, everyday situations.  Since we have a wide age and lifestyle range within our group, we tend to have many different activities that we practice.  Some of the group favourites are:

  • Mock Theatre
  • Swimming
  • Bowling
  • Grocery shopping
  • Role-playing
  • Air hockey tournaments
  • Track and field outings
  • Youth Program “Survivor”

The life and social skills that we practice during these activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Budgeting and handling money
  • Safely handling and serving food
  • Food quality and selection
  • Menu planning and preparation
  • Food service and safe food storage
  • Table manners
  • Respecting other people’s space, personalities, and differences
  • Recognizing different feelings in other people
  • Recognizing our feelings and how our thoughts affect and direct our feelings and actions
  • Accepting responsibility for our thoughts, feelings, and actions
  • Understanding the value of rules and how to follow them
  • Turn-taking and good sportsmanship
  • Team-work
  • Learning how to deal with difficult situations
  • Score-keeping
  • Measuring using millimetres, centimetres, and metres
  • Measuring time using a stop-watch
  • Setting up a tent and a camp
  • Safe practice around a fire
  • Personal hygiene
  • Learning to be a self-advocate
  • Cleaning, sweeping, mopping, and washing and drying dishes

The CYC Program uses everyday, common situations to pinpoint and teach relevant life and social skills in a supported environment.  We support individuals to increase self-esteem and confidence in the practice of these skills.  We also recognize and use each individual’s personal strengths to determine the method used to teach targeted skills.
